Tell us about the Northwest Passage
Seabourn left from anchoring in Nome, Alaska--headed South for 24 hours to take care of Seabourn business, telling passengers it wouldn't impact the schedule. Of course, we did not expedition during that time, nor for the next 3 days. No zodiacing, no other landing in Alaska saying only US flagged/crewed ships could BUT the ship had done just that in Nome. No announcement when crossed Arctic Circle. Common room windows dirty, reported, not cleaned on an EXPEDITION cruise, where we want to see things!!! No Arctic appropriate paraphanalia to purchase (polar plunge t-shirts, postcards, badges); stuffed penguins for sale in the Arctic where no penguins live; no way to send a postcard/no help to send a postcard/no stamps; singles ate with staff (no communication that to eat with Expedition team to ask Guest Services); no communication that after paying for expedition cruise, certain locations you'd have to pay extra for expeditions...and by the way, there are not enough slots for all those on boards; no notice of our last expedition, they were just DONE. It was so disappointing to be on an expedition that behaved like a cruise. And sailed the most beautiful fjord, timed for in the night.
Something Else?
Understand your customer. This was a big miss for meeting our expectations. Do not recommend Seabourn for people that want to expedition. Seabourn is for people who want to dress up (dinner jackets and little black dresses) for dinner. Seabourn is for people who want to play trivia, throw the penguin in a bucket and win the stuffed animal, eat caviar. Seabourn is for people who take 6 steps to get off the zodiac, where expeditioners take 3 steps.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to The Arctic?
Do not go with Seabourn, especially West to East, you will lose 7 hours if you end up in Nuuk, Greenland. West to East bound, recommend left side of the ship. Try to make sure that ship has permission to land, zodiac, expedition where they are sailing.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
Yes, will ask more questions about why so many sea days, make up of clientele (age, repeat customers).
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
Do not recommend Seabourn for expedition.
