Nordaustlandet

The second largest island in the archipelago, Nordaustlandet simply means North East Land. Its western edge makes up half of the Hinlopen Strait with scenery that is rugged, ice-capped and dominated by the large Wahlenbergfjorden. There's more ice in the east where the cap called Austfonna is over 500m thick. This ice has carved a staggering landscape with steep cliffs and stretches of tundra. Like much of the archipelago it is rich in wildlife and especially good for walrus sightings.
