Smeerenburg

Smeerenburg is an old whaling station, dating back to the 1600s when Dutch whales set up a base on Amsterdamoya. Nowadays all that's left are the circular remains of the cauldrons, used to boil the blubber of Bowhead whales. The beaches around Smeerenburg are also popular with walrus, who love to sleep for up to a week at a time!
